Everyone loves to talk about the “perfect timing” for a baby. I asked The Motherhood to weigh in (the truest wisdom keepers!) . Here’s how the votes landed:

Spring — 50%
Winter — 27%
Fall — 18%
Summer — 5%
Let’s break down the perks and pain points of each:
Spring (The Fan Favourite)
Pros:
Longer daylight = a mental health boost when you’re up at all hours
Easy stroller walks without extreme cold or heat
Babies can wear normal clothing, not 42 layers
Cons:
Allergy season + newborn congestion = stress
The weather can be unpredictable (snowing on Monday, sunburn on Friday especially in Calgary!)
Summer (Obviously last place)
Pros:
Getting outside is easy — no wrestling with snow suits
Vitamin D!
Cons:
Being very pregnant in the heat = absolutely miserable
Babies can’t wear sunscreen under 6 months
Overheating is a constant worry
Everyone is out living their best life and you might feel stuck inside
Fall (Quietly underrated)
Pros:
Cozy temps make outings more comfortable
Gorgeous photos opts! Pumpkins, sweaters, baby in a leaf pile? Come on
Baby is a fun age by next summer for travel, water play, and family adventures
Less pressure to “do it all” socially
Cons:
Transition into shorter days can hit mental health hard
Cold + flu season begins right as baby’s immune system is brand new
Winter (Second place and my personal pick!)
Pros:
Minimal FOMO! Everyone is hibernating
Postpartum bodies love sweatpants season
Cozy snuggles feel extra magical
Babies sleep well in cooler temps
Cons:
Cabin fever is real
Tricky to go anywhere: icy sidewalks + car seat blankets + boots = a full workout
If you have older kids, keeping them entertained indoors is… a challenge
And here’s some serious wisdom from a regular mom! I am grateful for you sharing this, it makes SO much sense!
Winter baby for the first (embrace the hibernation), Spring baby for every one after!
Embrace the hibernation and cozy feels of winter with that first baby. But when you a gaggle of other children to try to keep inside? Nightmare. The mild temperatures and activities in spring/summer are helpful to entertain the rest of your children.
So, what’s the verdict? Every season has its “this is amazing” moments… and its frustrations. Also, who are we kidding? Pregnancy and birth is not something we can plan (although I LOVE planning!).
The moral of the story is that your beautiful baby will be born in the season they were meant to be born in. Embrace the pros and try to see past the cons. Postpartum is difficult regardless. Lucky for us, we have The Motherhood to support us!
