What is the Best Sibling Age Gap? The Motherhood Weighs In

Hey, Mamas! We’ve all been there, staring at our toddler’s chaotic (but cute) energy and wondering, 'Could I really do this all over again right now?'

This week, I took that burning question to The Motherhood to settle the debate once and for all: is there actually a magic number when it comes to age gaps? Thank you to our incredible community of mothers who have shared their wisdom and experience to help mothers navigate this burning question.

The Results Are In: The "Sweet Spot" Revealed

I asked, you answered! Here is how the percentages broke down for the ideal age gap:

Age Gap Range

Percentage of Moms

Less than 2 years

13%

2-3 years

72%

4+ years

15%

As you can see, the 2-3 year gap is the clear winner for the majority of our community! But as we all know, every family dynamic is different. Let me be very clear, there is NO perfect age gap. But, let’s still break down the pros and cons of each.

The "Two Under Two" Club (Less than 2 Years)

While only 13% of you voted this as "ideal," those who did emphasized that it’s all about the long game.

  • The Struggle: Many moms noted that this gap is incredibly demanding. You’re often dealing with a toddler who isn't potty trained, big emotions, and two little humans who need you for literally everything at the same time.

  • The Guilt Factor: A common theme in our poll was the "mom guilt" associated with a small gap. Moms reported feeling like they lacked the physical energy to be fully "there" for both babies at once.

  • The Perks: If you have a strong support system, you can "max out" your maternity leaves and get the diaper phase over with all at once. While it’s hard at the start, things balance out as they grow up together.

The Fan Favorite (2–3 Year Gap)

With 72% of the vote, this is the clear winner for The Motherhood. It’s the middle ground that seems to offer the best of both worlds.

  • The Struggle: You are still dealing with the "terrible twos" or "threenager" energy while navigating life with a newborn, which can be a test of patience for any parent.

  • The Sweet Spot: This gap is often seen as the ideal balance: your oldest is starting to gain some independence, but they are still close enough in age to eventually become built in playmates.

  • The Perks: Many moms find this timing helps keep the kids on a similar schedule eventually, making family outings and activities easier to manage than having a huge age spread.

The "Slow Down" Gap (4+ Years)

Around 15% of you swear by a larger gap, and the reasons for choosing a "reset" are beautiful.

  • The Struggle: You might feel like you’ve "started over" just as you were regaining your freedom, and the kids may not play together in the same way initially due to different developmental stages.

  • The "Slow Down" Factor: Instead of the early years feeling like one big blur, a larger gap allows the family to catch their breath. You can focus on your newborn while your oldest is more independent.

  • The Perks: You get to truly savor the baby phase of each child individually. Plus, having a child who is potty trained and potentially in school makes the transition to a family of four feel much more manageable.

The Bottom Line: Your "Perfect" is Personal

While the data points toward 2-3 years, the most important takeaway from our community poll was this: There is no universal "perfect" age gap.

When you’re trying to decide what’s right for your family, remember that these four factors often matter more than the number of months between birthdays:

  1. Child’s Personality: Some toddlers handle change better than others!

  2. Financial Situation: Childcare costs and gear add up quickly. Not all maternity leaves provide top-up.

  3. Support System: Do you have family around for support? Do you live overseas?

  4. Maternal Wellness: Your mental and physical health is the foundation of your family.

Whether you have "two under two" and are currently navigating the beautiful chaos of double diapers, or you waited five years and are soaking up every newborn snuggle while your oldest is at school, please hear this: You are doing an incredible job.

The "perfect" gap is simply the one that brought your babies to you. There is no right or wrong way to build a family, and there is no timeline that makes you a better or more capable mother. Every stage has its shadows, but every stage has so much light, too.

I am endlessly grateful for the wisdom, honesty, and vulnerability shared by The Motherhood.
