When you announce that you are pregnant one of the first questions everyone asks is "are you finding out gender?! After polling The Motherhood the results are in! From the women in The Motherhood, 67% prefer to know their baby's gender ahead of time, while 33% choose to keep it a surprise. Interestingly, none admitted they found out but didn’t share the news—maybe they are holding that delightful secret close to their hearts!
Let’s explore this topic, weigh the benefits and drawbacks of discovering the gender of our little ones, and hopefully, help you clarify your decision-making process!
The Excitement of Knowing
Finding out your baby's gender before birth can spark immense excitement. Picture the moment you see that ultrasound image, and the technician announces, "It’s a girl!" or "It's a boy!" This announcement can fill your heart with joy and immediately inspire you to plan everything around your baby's identity.
Knowing the gender can influence your nesting experience significantly. If you know it's a girl, you might be inclined to design a beautiful nursery filled with soft pastels and select delightful dresses and bows. A study from the American Pregnancy Association shows that 70% of parents who know the gender report feeling a stronger emotional connection during pregnancy.

The Thrill of Surprise
On the other hand, there’s something uniquely magical about the idea of surprise. Think about that moment when the doctor hands you your baby, and you have no idea whether you should say “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” The anticipation can be your strongest motivation to get that baby out!
Surprises can create joyful reactions from family and friends. Consider the excitement that fills a room when someone hears “It’s a boy!” or "It's a girl!" for the very first time. A study by BabyCenter showed that 45% of couples who kept the gender a surprise reported it added to their overall excitement and anticipation for the arrival of their baby. I had a surprise gender for both my children and the thrill of that moment is truly incomparable.

The Practical Side
While emotions are important, it’s also wise to consider the practical aspects. Learning the gender can streamline planning—like preparing a name or buying clothes. It can ease stress, particularly for first-time mothers who need to feel organized.
For those leaning towards the surprise route, preparing a gender-neutral nursery can save money while giving you flexibility. Shades of green, yellow, and grey can create a soothing space suitable for any baby, while also leaving room for exciting shopping later on. And really, does pink have to be for girls and blue have to be for boys? Regardless of gender, choose a colour that evokes warmth and calmness from you, since you will be spending plenty of time in there rocking with your bundle of joy.
Emotional Preferences
When making this decision, consider your emotional inclinations. Some mothers naturally prefer transparency, while others cherish the excitement of mystery. Talking with fellow moms can provide fresh insights and affirm your thoughts. You might even explore the idea of a gender reveal party if you decide to know ahead of time.
Another, often not talked about, benefit to finding out the gender of your baby before birth is coming to terms with the gender you were not expecting. If you are hoping for the birth of a girl, finding out before birth that you are having a boy provides you with time to cope with this reality and get excited!
Embracing the Journey Ahead
Ultimately, whether you discover your baby's gender before birth or embrace the surprise, remember that both paths are valid and rewarding. No matter your choice, celebrate the journey leading to your baby's arrival.
We found out the gender with both of our girls. Though I wish I was the type to be able to hold out for the worlds best surprise, it was extremely comforting and exciting for both myself and fiancé to know ahead of time what we were having! It also made the name choosing process a lot easier as well. As an added bonus for us, hand me downs for life haha.
